How the Fuel Cost Calculator works

This calculator estimates the fuel cost of a trip from its distance, your vehicle's efficiency, and the fuel price. It's handy for budgeting road trips, comparing routes or vehicles, and splitting fuel costs with travel companions.

Formula

Fuel cost = (Distance ÷ MPG) × Price per gallon

Distance is the trip length, MPG is your vehicle's fuel efficiency, and price per gallon is the local fuel price. Distance ÷ MPG gives the gallons needed; multiplying by price gives the cost.

Worked example: a 480-mile trip, 30 MPG, $3.60/gallon

  1. Gallons needed = 480 ÷ 30 = 16 gallons.
  2. Fuel cost = 16 × 3.60 = $57.60 for the trip.
  3. A less efficient vehicle at 20 MPG would need 24 gallons = $86.40 — about $29 more.
  4. Splitting $57.60 among 4 travelers is $14.40 each.

How to read the result

Fuel cost scales directly with distance and price but inversely with efficiency, so a more efficient vehicle or a shorter route saves proportionally. For round trips, remember to double the one-way distance.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting to double the distance for a round trip.
  • Using the official MPG rating rather than your real-world figure.
  • Ignoring that hills, traffic, and cargo raise actual fuel use.

Frequently Asked Questions — Fuel Cost Calculator

Divide the distance by your MPG to get the gallons needed, then multiply by the price per gallon. Double the distance for a round trip.
Your real-world MPG gives a more accurate estimate, since actual economy is usually lower than the official rating, especially in traffic.
Drive a more efficient vehicle, choose shorter or less congested routes, keep tires inflated, and avoid carrying unnecessary weight.
