How the Square Footage Calculator works
This calculator computes the area of a space in square feet (or square meters) from its dimensions, and handles irregular rooms by combining rectangles. It's essential for flooring, paint, landscaping, and real-estate estimates.
Formula
Area = Length × Width (sum the areas of each rectangle for irregular shapes)
Length and width must be in the same unit; the result is in square units. For L-shaped or irregular spaces, split the area into rectangles, compute each, and add them together.
Worked example: an L-shaped room
Main rectangle: 12 ft × 15 ft = 180 sq ft.
The smaller extension: 6 ft × 8 ft = 48 sq ft.
Total area = 180 + 48 = 228 square feet.
For flooring, add about 10% for cuts and waste: 228 × 1.10 ≈ 251 sq ft to order.
How to read the result
Square footage drives material quantities, so add a waste factor for anything you cut (flooring, tile, carpet) — typically 5–10%, more for diagonal or patterned layouts. For paint, account for coats and coverage per gallon rather than just wall area.
Common mistakes to avoid
Measuring in mixed units (feet and inches) without converting.
Forgetting a waste allowance for cut materials.
Treating an irregular room as a single rectangle.
Tips
Break irregular spaces into rectangles and add the areas.
Add 5–10% for waste on flooring and tile, more for diagonal patterns.
